CBAM cost preview

Live ETS price: €76.15/t CO₂. Sample: 1 tonne of CN 7222 at default factors costs ~€16.41 in CBAM certificates today.

Direct emissions
1.88 t CO₂/t
Indirect emissions
0.275 t CO₂/t
CBAM cost (1000 t shipment)
€16,410
How is this calculated?

CBAM certificate cost = embedded emissions × ETS price × (1 − free-allocation factor) × phase-in markup.

Phase-in 2026: 10% of full certificate cost. Free allocation assumed 0% in this preview.

Methodology guide -- CN 7222 (stainless bars and rods, other)

CN 7222 covers cold-finished and profile stainless bars, used in machining and automotive applications. Most production is downstream of CN 7221 hot-rolled stainless bar.

Step 1 -- request the full chain verification. Like wire (CN 7217), CN 7222 requires upstream stainless-bar emissions to be passed through. A finishing-only emissions report is insufficient.

Step 2 -- handle alloy specifics carefully. Stainless bar applications often demand specific grades (303, 316, etc.) with controlled alloy content. Ask the supplier for grade-specific emissions if your imports are grade-concentrated.

Step 3 -- track quarterly, like all in-scope steel. From 2026, importers hold 50% of projected CBAM certificates by end of each quarter. Stainless bar volumes are smaller but per-tonne CBAM cost is higher than carbon steel, so the dollar impact is non-negligible.

Frequently asked questions

What is CN 7222?
Other bars and rods of stainless steel (bright bars, polygonal sections, profile bars). Used in machining, automotive components, fasteners.
How does CN 7222 differ from CN 7221 (hot-rolled stainless bar)?
CN 7221 is hot-rolled, in coils, with circular cross-section. CN 7222 is everything else -- cold-finished, profile bars, polygonal. Emissions per tonne are similar; the cold-finishing step adds <0.1 t/t.
