What is CBAM?

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is an EU tool that prices carbon embedded in imports of cement, iron & steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen. Importers must hold CBAM certificates matching the embedded emissions of what they bring in, at EU ETS prices.

When is the next CBAM deadline?

30 June 2026 — importers must hold 50% of their projected CBAM certificates for the first half of 2026. The first annual CBAM declaration is due 31 March 2027, covering calendar 2026 imports, with certificate surrender by 31 May 2027.

Is my company in scope?

If you import any CN code in Annex I of the CBAM Regulation (EU 2023/956) above the 50 tonne per year de minimis threshold, yes. The 6 sectors are cement, iron/steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, hydrogen. Run /cn-check to verify a specific code.

What is an "authorised CBAM declarant"?

From 1 January 2026 only authorised CBAM declarants can import covered goods into the EU. You apply to your member state's competent authority via the EU CBAM Registry. Applications take weeks — start now if you haven't.

Why does the calculator use EU default factors?

For triage. The free calculator estimates liability using the EU default values from IR 2023/1773 — which are deliberately high to incentivise collecting actual supplier data. When you move to Starter, we help you collect supplier-specific emissions via our portal, which usually lowers your certificate cost materially.

How accurate is the free calculator?

Accurate enough for budgeting, not for filing. Real certificate cost depends on actual supplier emissions (usually different from defaults), carbon price already paid in the origin country (deductible), and the quarterly average ETS price. Paid tiers track all of this.

Do you support SEPA?

Yes — SEPA Direct Debit is available at Stripe Checkout alongside Visa / Mastercard / American Express.

Is this legal advice?

No. AutoCBAM provides compliance tooling and informational estimates. Binding CBAM declarations require verification by an accredited verifier and legal review for complex cases. We make the operational work faster; we do not replace your lawyer or verifier.

Who built AutoCBAM?

Alekszandr Bricskin, founder of Agonist Development AB (Stockholm). Same team as governancer.com (EU AI Act compliance).
