CBAM cost preview

Live ETS price: €76.15/t CO₂. Sample: 1 tonne of CN 7225 at default factors costs ~€16.41 in CBAM certificates today.

Direct emissions
1.88 t CO₂/t
Indirect emissions
0.275 t CO₂/t
CBAM cost (1000 t shipment)
€16,410
How is this calculated?

CBAM certificate cost = embedded emissions × ETS price × (1 − free-allocation factor) × phase-in markup.

Phase-in 2026: 10% of full certificate cost. Free allocation assumed 0% in this preview.

Methodology guide -- CN 7225 (flat-rolled alloy steel, ≥600mm)

CN 7225 is the alloy-steel cousin of CN 7208 -- adds silicon, manganese, chromium, vanadium for specific industrial applications. Chinese mills are the dominant non-EU source.

Step 1 -- verify alloy content and route. Alloy steel is BF-BOF dominated; emissions are 1.9-2.2 t/t direct. Silicon-electrical steel for transformers is a high-value sub-category with growing verification practice -- ask first.

Step 2 -- handle automotive HSLA carefully. Automotive supply chains are increasingly demanding low-carbon steel for ESG reporting. Some mills (POSCO, Tata Steel UK) offer "green steel" verified-data programs at a premium. Worth investigating for high-volume automotive imports.

Step 3 -- understand grade-specific allocation. A mill running multiple alloy grades on the same line must allocate emissions per Reg. 2025/2621 Article 7. The complexity favours suppliers with grade-segregated production over multi-grade plants.

Frequently asked questions

What is CN 7225?
Flat-rolled products of other alloy steel, ≥600mm wide. Includes silicon-electrical steel, tool steel, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel for automotive.
How does the alloy content affect emissions?
Slightly higher than carbon steel due to alloying elements (silicon, manganese, chromium, vanadium). Typical 1.9-2.2 t CO2/t direct from BF-BOF mills.
Is silicon-electrical steel (transformer steel) covered?
Yes -- CN 72251910 covers grain-oriented silicon-electrical steel; in scope of CBAM. Strategic for the energy transition (transformers, motors), so verified data is increasingly available.
