Methodology guide -- CN 7201 (pig iron)

Pig iron is the direct blast-furnace output, used as feedstock for steel mills. Brazilian charcoal-pig iron (charcoal-fired blast furnaces) is uniquely low-carbon if sourced from sustainable plantation charcoal -- a notable CBAM opportunity.

Step 1 -- distinguish coke-pig from charcoal-pig. Brazilian Vale-grade pig iron is coke-fired (~1.6-1.8 t CO2/t direct). Brazilian small-scale charcoal pig iron from sustainable plantations can be near-zero net emissions on a biogenic-CO2 basis -- but the EU CBAM treatment of biogenic CO2 is still being clarified.

Step 2 -- request verified data with carbon-source breakdown. A charcoal-pig supplier should disclose the charcoal source (sustainable plantation vs. native forest) and the verifier should certify on a Reg. 2025/2621 basis.

Step 3 -- handle Ukrainian supply with care. Ukrainian pig iron is coke-fired. Volumes have been disrupted post-2022 but remain a relevant non-EU source.

Frequently asked questions

What is CN 7201?
Pig iron and spiegeleisen in pigs, blocks or other primary forms. Brazil and Ukraine are the main non-EU sources.
How is pig iron different from steel for CBAM?
Pig iron is iron + 4% carbon, the direct output of a blast furnace. Steel is pig iron + carbon adjustment + alloying. Pig iron emissions are ~1.5-1.8 t CO2/t -- lower per tonne than finished steel because it skips the BOF/EAF + finishing stages.
